Between 8:00 and 8:30 am we pick up passengers at their accommodation and head south. After 1 hour and 20 minutes we reach Punta del Árbol, where the mainland road ends. On the way, your driver-guide shares stories about Punta Arenas, its culture and its history.
At Punta del Árbol the adventure begins on a coastal trail through a lush, pristine forest of coigüe and canelo trees, with plenty of Magellanic flora, especially calafate. On the other side, the Strait of Magellan stays with us the whole way: you can see several species of ducks, dolphins and, with a lot of luck, whales.
The hike is about 6 kilometers long and ends at the southernmost point of mainland South America, San Isidro Lighthouse, a beautiful spot where photography is the main activity.
Once there, there is time to rest and have a snack while the guide shares historical, geographic and safety information, as well as the story of the native peoples: their arrival, their origin and their extermination in the late 19th century.
Proper clothing is required, since the trail crosses several streams over logs while holding a rope. That is the adventurous touch of an unmissable trek.
Fort Bulnes
A place where nature and history meet. You will discover Chile's most important fort, founded in 1843, the story of the discovery of the Strait of Magellan in 1520 and the tragic story of Port Famine in 1584, where 250 Spaniards died trying to establish the first colony in this remote place.
You will explore the interpretation center, with exhibits on the human and natural history of the Strait of Magellan. Then you will visit the Strait viewpoint, the O'Higgins lighthouse, the church, the post office, the jail and the stables; each place offers a unique look at the life of the fort's inhabitants.
A highlight is the stop at the landmark considered the geographic center of Chile, which spans from the country's northern border to the South Pole: a perfect photo opportunity and a moment to take in the vastness of Chilean territory.
Return
The tour ends with the drive back to your accommodation in Punta Arenas, with the chance to spot dolphins or whales depending on the season.
